Industry 4.0 termed “the fourth industrial revolution” is set to transform manufacturing over the next few years. Not a new technology in itself – instead, Industry 4.0 is a fusion of a number of significant and emerging technologies: Big Data, advanced analytics, the Internet of Things, digital modelling, additive manufacturing, computer-integrated manufacturing and so on. In short, these various technologies can come together to enable manufacturers to do things they couldn’t do before.
How prepared are UK manufacturing companies for Industry 4.0?
The Manufacturer carried out a survey with 100 decision makers to find out how UK manufacturing companies are prepared for Industry 4.0.
Take a look at some of the key findings in our Industry 4.0 infographic below:
Industry 4.0’s smarter manufacturing technologies can make a very real impact on the factory floor. Greater connectivity through the Internet of Things (IoT), for instance, brings smart manufacturing, with sensors and controllers on factory floors communicating with each other, and central control systems.
In short, the opportunity to grow your manufacturing business is delivered by the IoT. Not convinced? Manufacturing businesses are doing these things now.
For a real-world example of Industry 4.0 and the IoT in action, look no further than a recent project we delivered for long-term customer Arlington Automotive.
The project involved linking Arlington’s K8 Manufacturing ERP system to two of their machine presses to provide real-time machine data. Wi-Fi automation devices connected to a micro-switch in each press enabled the presses to become ‘Internet-connected things’. Following the IoT implementation, the data enabled Arlington to optimise shifts, resulting in a 16% gain in productivity.
The bottom line
As our Industry 4.0 infographic shows, Industry 4.0 brings opportunities for manufacturers to grow their business. As with many technology shifts, those businesses that embrace change faster are likely to do better than those which resist it.
